About Kristie

Background

I was born a natural linguist. I have loved reading since I was very young, and developed a passion for history as a child by watching old films and documentaries with my father. I decided that I wanted to be a teacher while still in grade school myself, and I credit my former educators with showing me how to make learning enjoyable.

While earning my Bachelor's degree at UCLA, I focused on Ancient History, and studied Latin and Greek so that I could study the past in the words of the ancient authors themselves. After completing a year in UCLA's Post-Baccalaureate Program in Classics, I began my Master's degree in the Program in the Ancient Mediterranean World under the Classics department at the University of Chicago. I plan to complete my Ph.D. so that I can become an educator and share my love of knowledge with the next generation.

Expertise

I can read in seven languages and offer lessons in Latin, Ancient Greek, and Italian. I also tutor students in History, English, Reading Skills, and Reading Comprehension. My students range in age from kindergarteners to retirees; I believe that no one is too young or too old to learn, and I find that I often learn from my students, in turn!

My teaching strategies draw on the lessons that I still remember from the teachers and professors who inspired me when I was young. Their zeal for teaching and their encouragement for me to connect with the material led me to develop an approach that combines my animated personality with my ability to draw analogies and parallels to relatable examples and to contextualize ancient ideas and concepts within today's world.

Contact Me

I specialize in online tutoring, using Zoom and Skype to meet with students as close as the next city over, and as far away as China and Australia. I have students with whom I meet weekly or even every weekday, and many whom I help on an as-needed basis. Thus, I am always able to accommodate new students.
